Fieldwork

Internal quarterly

Internal communications teams almost always open with an apology about their photography. The images are taken on phones, in poor light, by people with other jobs.

We would use nothing else. Designed properly, the kind of photograph an employee sends in reads as immediacy rather than as a compromise.

Decisions

  • Crop hard, place deliberately

Phone images rarely survive at full frame but often contain one strong crop. Every image gets cropped to its best rectangle rather than placed as shot.

  • A dark ground

Uneven exposure and mixed white balance are far less obvious against a dark page than a white one — the same reasoning behind this website's own palette.

  • Captions do real work

Names, sites and dates are set as designed elements rather than afterthoughts, because in an internal magazine the caption is frequently the reason someone opened the page.
