Alumni magazine design
An alumni magazine has to work across sixty years of readership at once — a recent leaver and someone who graduated in 1968 opening the same issue. It also has to carry class notes, which are the most-read and least-designed pages in the whole publication.
Archive photography is usually part of the job: scans of varying quality, uncredited prints, and a handful of genuinely good images that deserve a full page. Deciding which is which is most of the work.

Questions we get asked
- Our archive scans are poor. Can they be used?
- Often, yes. We can correct cast, contrast and dust, and we will scale an image to the size it can actually carry. What cannot be fixed is resolution that was never captured — we will tell you which images to re-scan.
- Class notes run to thousands of words. How is that handled?
- As its own designed system: a tighter grid, a smaller type size that is still comfortable, and clear year markers so a reader finds their cohort in seconds. It is treated as a feature of the magazine, not an appendix.
