Book layout design

Book layout design for authors, companies and coffee table books

Book layout, or interior design, is everything inside the cover: the text typeset for long reading, chapter openers, the front and back matter, and photographs, tables and notes placed so a reader never stumbles. It is the difference between a manuscript and a book.

We lay out non-fiction, memoirs, company and institution histories, and illustrated books, from your final edited manuscript and images. You receive a press-ready PDF made to your printer's or print-on-demand service's specification, with a cover and spine to match.

Or write to magz@digi.ai.in or WhatsApp +91 98605 96905.

What book layout design covers

  • Text design

Typeface, size, leading and margins chosen for the length of the book and the paper it is printed on.

  • Typesetting

Every page set by hand where it matters: no stranded lines at the top of a page, no hyphen ladders, chapter ends that land well.

  • Front and back matter

Title and copyright pages, contents, foreword, acknowledgements, notes, bibliography, and an index you supply.

  • Images and tables

Photographs with captions and credits, archive scans corrected, tables and charts set in the book's style.

Printers and print-on-demand

We build the PDF to the trim size, bleed, margins and paper of the printer you choose, whether an offset printer or a print-on-demand service such as Amazon KDP or IngramSpark, and answer your printer's technical questions directly. We do not buy print.

This service is for print and PDF interiors. Reflowable ebooks (EPUB or Kindle files) are a separate job and not included.

Company and institution histories

An anniversary history is a book and a corporate gift at once: archive photographs, a timeline, the founders and the people who built the place. Heavily illustrated histories sit between book layout and a coffee table book; we advise which yours is before quoting.

Closest samples

Studio specimens, not client commissions: Ninety Years is a company-history cover; Safar is a 12-page travel issue with long-form pages. All our work.

Web edition

The same issue can also be delivered as a web edition: an interactive digital magazine with text that fits any phone, video and links that work, and a reader report of opens, reading depth and time spent. One link to share by email or WhatsApp.

Web edition included with this format.

Issue launch kit

The posts that launch your issue, made from it and in its design, in your name and your voice: a cover reveal for the feed and stories, a LinkedIn carousel of the main idea, quote cards, a chart card and a note for WhatsApp, each with a suggested caption. Nothing on them mentions us.

Issue launch kit: about 10 pieces, US$99 (₹6,000 in India) per issue.

  • Cover reveal post: her portrait, her name, the Jharokha cover and Issue 01 is out
  • First LinkedIn carousel slide: Quiet is expensive, with her name
  • Quote card with her black-and-white portrait and a line from her essay
  • WhatsApp card: a note from her with the cover, reply for the link

A sample kit for Jharokha, Issue 01. Rukmini Sethna, her company and every figure are fictional; the photographs are licensed stock. See the whole kit.

Questions we get asked

What is book layout design?
The design and typesetting of a book's interior: the text, chapter openers, front and back matter, images and tables, made into a press-ready file. It is also called interior design or book typesetting.
How much does book layout cost?
From US$1,490 for 48–200 pages, including the cover and spine, for clients outside India (₹45,000 in India). Shorter books of 24–32 pages start at US$749. The quote depends on page count and the number of images, tables and notes.
Can you lay out a book for Amazon KDP or IngramSpark?
Yes, for their print books. We build the interior and cover PDFs to the trim size, margin and bleed rules of the service you use.
Do you make Kindle or EPUB ebooks?
No. This service is for print and PDF interiors; reflowable ebook files are a separate job we do not include.
Do you edit or proofread the manuscript?
No. Send the final edited text. We fix layout problems (bad breaks, stranded lines, hyphenation) and send proofs, but copy-editing and proofreading the words are for your editor.
How long does a book take?
Sample spreads come first, so the design is agreed before the whole book is set. The full timetable depends on length and is fixed in the quote.
