Jharokha

Issue 01, The quiet room

Jharokha is a sample from our studio: the personal magazine of Rukmini Sethna, founder of a Mumbai interiors studio, written for the families, hotel owners and architects she works with. She, her company, her clients and every figure are fictional; the photographs are licensed stock.

A founder's magazine for an elite audience has to look as considered as the rooms she makes. So it borrows the habits of a luxury title: a high-contrast serif masthead, generous white on the openers, full-bleed rooms, claret used sparingly and her own hand for the signature and the marks.

Decisions

  • A luxury masthead with her name under it

Jharokha in a thin Bodoni across the top; the line beneath says whose quarterly it is.

  • Colour taken from the cover

Taupe from the backdrop, ivory from her jacket, claret for the accents and champagne for the charts.

  • Rooms, not renders

Real rooms and materials, chosen for light and quiet: an armchair in late sun, an evening room with drawn curtains, a chair leg as a tilted print.

  • Her own hand

Her signature and the marks on last year's guesses are set in script, the only place it appears.
