Field Heat

Issue 01, The first mile

Field Heat is a sample from our studio of a new kind of issue: one person's magazine. Gauri Sathe and Sathe Cold Chain are fictional, and so are every figure, letter and person in it; the photographs are licensed stock.

A founder's magazine works when it reads like the person, not the company. So it opens on a signed letter, carries one argument across three pages, shows her own logbooks rather than industry claims, and ends by scoring what she got wrong.

The same issue as a phone-first web magazine: text that reflows, a shoot to swipe, colours to tap.

Decisions

  • Her name on the masthead

The title is Field Heat; the line under it is Gauri Sathe's quarterly. Readers should know whose thinking they are holding before they open it.

  • One warm colour, one cold

Pomegranate red for the masthead and her pen, slate and a pale ice tint for the data and letters: the two ends of a cold chain.

  • Her handwriting

Her signature and the scores on the last page are set in a handwriting face, used only where she would have written by hand.

  • Honest about what is invented

The data page, the case story and the letters each say they are sample material, and the studio page says the author and company are fictional.
