Tej

Issue 01, The bold issue

Tej is a sample issue from our studio: a fashion monthly with Indian, East Asian and Black models, made at the full length of a real issue so the pacing can be judged, not only the cover.

A 32-page issue has to change pace: short front-of-book pages, then long shoots that run across spreads, a profile in text, a how-to, and back-of-book service. Each story has its own display treatment, and the issue still reads as one magazine.

Decisions

  • Four shoots, four looks

A car park at night, coloured studio gels, a yellow room of primaries and a beauty close-up. Each shoot comes from one photographer, so the model and light hold across its pages.

  • A type treatment per story

A heavy grotesque for Level minus two, a thin sans for Stand in the light, a wide italic for Primary and a tight serif for the profile.

  • Front of book that is useful

Four bold moves, five minutes with a stylist, one accessory and five clashing colours: short pages a reader can act on.

  • Furniture of a real issue

Contents, editor's letter, the team and contributors, where to find it, the last word and the studio pages at the back.
